Most people who come to us for help with their tax return aren't behind because they're careless. They're busy. The letter from HMRC sits on the side, January gets closer, and it starts to weigh on them.

We take that off your plate. You send us what we need, we do the rest, and you know exactly where you stand well before the deadline.

Who we help

We look after tax returns for people across Durham, the North East and the rest of the UK, including:

  • Employees with a side income, from freelance work to selling online

  • Landlords, whether you rent out one property or several

  • Sole traders and the self employed

  • Company directors

  • People filing for the first time, or who've had a letter from HMRC asking them to

  • Anyone who thinks they might be owed a refund

If you're not sure whether you need to file at all, ask us. It's a short conversation and we'll give you a straight answer.

What's included

  • Preparing and filing your self assessment tax return with HMRC

  • Registering you with HMRC if you're new to self assessment

  • Checking you're claiming the expenses and allowances you're entitled to

  • Telling you what you owe, or what's coming back to you, and when to pay

  • Explaining payments on account in plain English, so July doesn't catch you out

  • Dealing with HMRC for you if they get in touch about your return

How it works

  1. Book a short discovery call. We'll talk through your situation and send you a clear quote.

  2. We send you a simple checklist of what we need. Nothing more.

  3. You send your documents over securely via our portal.

  4. We prepare your return and talk you through it before anything is filed.

  5. Once you're happy, we submit it to HMRC and confirm what to pay and when.

Next year, we'll be in touch in good time, so it never turns into a January rush.

What it costs

Every situation is a little different, so we give you a fixed quote before we start. Most personal tax returns are from £175 plus VAT. You'll know the price up front, and it won't change unless your situation does.

Making Tax Digital

If you're self employed or a landlord, the way you report your income to HMRC is changing. Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you keep digital records and send HMRC an update every quarter, alongside a yearly return.

When it applies to you depends on your income from self employment and property, before expenses:

  • Over £50,000: from April 2026

  • Over £30,000: from April 2027

  • Over £20,000: from April 2028

Income from employment doesn't count towards these figures. If it's likely to apply to you, we'll help you get set up on the right software and keep it simple. We've worked with Xero since 2011, so this is familiar ground for us.

Common questions

When is the tax return deadline? Online returns need to be filed, and any tax paid, by 31 January after the tax year ends. If you're new to self assessment, you need to register with HMRC by 5 October.

What do I need to send you? It depends on your income. Usually it's your P60 or payslips, plus details of any self employed income, rental income and costs, interest or dividends. We'll send you a checklist so you don't have to guess.

I've missed the deadline. Can you still help? Yes. Late returns bring a penalty, and it grows the longer it's left, so the sooner we start the better. We won't judge. We'll just help you get it sorted.

Do I need to file a tax return? You may need to if you're self employed, rent out property, have income that hasn't been taxed, or HMRC has written to ask you to. If you're unsure, ask us and we'll tell you.

What happens after it's submitted? We confirm what you owe and when, including any payment on account due the following July. Then we'll be in touch ahead of next year's return.
